I was wonder what gage strings you guys put on your guitars after they are built. I am particualry interested in nylon strings, but would like to hear from the steel string people also.

The reason I ask is because I recently put some high tension strings on my classical and was not only happy with the sound improvments, but to my surprise I actually like the feel of them better than medium tension strings.

I was thinking that I would just put high tension strings on my guitars and set the nut & saddle compensation accordingly, but I'm concerned that my potential customers might not like the high tension strings.

Thanks

Hi Graham

I use a Light Gauge on my Steel strings 10 to 52 unless a customer requests something different.

Graham,
I too like a heavier gauge string on classicals. You can play them harder,
when necessary without fear of buzzes and they seem brighter overall. On
my steel string guitars it's much more geared toward the style of playing.
Finger pickers generally like a light gauge string, while flat pickers like a
heavier gauge. Or do I have that backwards?

Generally, Martin SP 10-47 sometimes 11-52 both for finger style only. For altered tuning guitars I use a mixed set from Newstrings. Don't own a flatpick or dreadnaught.
